Take a walk on the wild side
Walk in the most spectacular scenery in Africa. This scenic Walking Safari takes place in the Ngorongoro Conservation area with the largest unbroken caldera in the world; the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater. During this remote African Walking Safari you will explore extinct volcanoes, diverse landscapes, wildlife and meet the local Maasai who live in the area. Immerse yourself in these beautiful highlands away from the crowds. The views and scenery are truly breathtaking.
Walking on the crater rim is an experience than many do not get to treasure.
Ngorongoro Walking Safaris are usually booked by guests who have already visited the crater and are looking to experience the ancient caldera in a different way. The crater floor is the best place for game viewing but it is very busy with tourists. Our Walking Safari takes guests around the far side of the crater where it is un-developed with no lodges or Game Drive tracks. Guests experience stunning views and remote communities.
We cannot walk inside the crater – this is forbidden by the conservation area. Our camp location is set in acacia woodlands just off the crater rim. We also explore other calderas and cones such as Olmoto and Empakai; areas which tourists can not normally reach.
Walks start in the morning from the eastern or western side of the crater, it is a 20km hike to our remote camp location on the northern side. Here you will enjoy a private camp with crew, freshly cooked meals and will set off the next day round to the other side for either an overnight in a crater lodge or to continue your Safari.
The Ngorongoro Crater rim is cold so this is an experience for adventurers wanting to do something unique. You will largely meet remote Maasai communities pushing their herds into grazing areas and be able to experience stunning vistas. Most of the Safari game remain on the crater floor.
Walking expeditions here can normally last between 2 – 4 days depending on how many cones you wish to explore. It can be extended with hikes down into Empakai and Natron or down into the Serengeti.
