Walking Safaris In Tanzania

Go where the rest can only dream

The authentic Safari experience. Walking Safaris in Tanzania are completely different to Game Driving. On foot you participate in the world of wildlife rather than as a spectator. A thrilling and unbeatable Safari experience.

Walking Safaris take two different forms; either shorter loop walks from our Wayo Africa camps or multiple day expedition walking Safaris, out of the vehicle and in remote areas of the park.

Why choose a Walking Safari?

Feel, hear and smell Tanzania

Imagine, you walk on the same path as the elephants and other wildlife, you feel the wind through your hair, hear a lion roar in the distance and smell the bush and wildlife. Your senses awaken, as you become part of your environment and the wilderness becomes more real.

Wildlife up close and personal

While animals will generally ignore you in a vehicle, they see you as another type of animal when you’re on foot. Getting up close and personal with wildlife is definitely a rush of excitement. Walking is also a great way to appreciate the small wildlife, which can’t be so easily seen from a vehicle.

Access to remote areas

On foot you can walk into remote areas and reach places that a Safari vehicle can’t. You are not constrained by roads and can go almost anywhere you like. Away from the crowds and off the beaten track, you can have freedom that’s incomparable to any Game Drive Safari.

Pioneers in Walking Safaris

Wayo Africa is a pioneer in setting up Walking Safaris, particularly in Serengeti National Park. Only a handful of companies have been granted permission to enter Serengeti on foot. The regulations stipulate that an armed and qualified Walking Guide from the operating company must accompany all walks. An armed Ranger will also join every walk.

Walking camps

As well as being able to provide walking from our Green Camps and partnering camps, we also have walking camps that move with the migration. These positions offer us the option for longer walks into remote areas, away from Game Drive tracks.

Short Walking Safaris are available at our Wayo Africa Camps

Multi-day Expedition Walking Safaris

Trekking in the Serengeti

Multi-day walking is a new concept Wayo Africa introduced into the Serengeti. You’ll have the opportunity to encounter wildlife up close and learn how to track animals with an expert Guide. Trekking Safaris are suited for people with an adequate state of fitness and adventurous travellers who will love to camp in the bush.

Trained Walking Guides

You will trek into remote areas of the Serengeti with one of our specialist-trained Walking Guides and a National Park Ranger. Your private camp crew will include a chef and waiters who will provide freshly cooked meals then pack up and move the camp as we navigate through the park on your multi-day trip. Camp will usually move every second day.

Camping in the bush

You will sleep in lightweight tents with comfortable mattresses and mosquito mesh sides and tops so you can gaze at the stars at night. We try to make it as comfortable as possible but a Trekking Safari is about being in the bush with the luxury and privilege of this rare experience over luxurious fixtures and fittings.

Tasty meals and fresh water

Delicious meals will be prepared by the camp crew who are resupplied every 3-4 days and all drinks are included in the accommodation price for this experience.

Choosing the best Walking Safari for you

We usually advise that Trekking Safaris shouldn’t be less than 2 nights, and recommend at least 3 nights. Trekking experiences can be included as part of wider vehicle-based Safari or standalone, speak to our team for details.

A general trekking day looks as follows:

  • 5am: Wake up and pack the camp up. The chef will have fresh coffee brewing and serve some muesli to kick-start the day.
  • 6am: The start of the morning walk, which will typically be 12km-15km on easy terrain. You will carry a high protein snack with you as well as lunch, which will both be enjoyed on the trail. As part of the equipment we have ultra-lightweight but comfortable camping chairs.
  • 2pm: Arrive into camp for a rest in the heat of the day. This may be a new location or the same camp location as the night before. Camp usually moves every other day.
  • 4pm: Local and short walks (around 5km) are enjoyed later in the afternoon.
  • 7pm: Freshly cooked dinner will be served and then overnight in our Wayo Walking Camp
