In December, the rains bring a flush of green to the park, drawing the Great Migration herds down from the north to congregate together for safety in the vast open plains, for one of the largest mass births on the planet. The wildebeest population will drop around 200,000 calves, mainly over the course of a 2-3 week period from February onwards. Through the eyes of a predator; this is a golden time.
The Serengeti is also quieter with less crowds and no river crossing pressures, but the game is exceptional. The short grass plains are an ideal habitat for cheetahs and lions that have been waiting, since April, for the herds to return. Driving from Ngorongoro through to the southern reaches in Kusini means guests can be moving through endless herds of wildebeest spanning kilometres.
