The Great Migration
One of nature’s greatest spectacles. Each year millions of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras thunder across the Serengeti plains in search of green grass and fresh water. It’s a breathtaking experience to witness those animals migrating from North to South, closely followed by their predators.
The Great Migration is estimated to be made up of 1.3 million wildebeest, 800,000 zebras and 200,000 Grant's Gazelle.
The Migration happens year-round inside the Serengeti National Park.
July – October: Northern Serengeti with Mara River crossings. A busy time of the year with visitors in the park.
December – May: Calving Season in the Southern and Eastern plains where huge, endless herds congregate together as far as the eye can see.
May – July & October – January: Herds migrate in smaller numbers (a few thousand) with long lines spread across the Serengeti system heading into Central, Western and Eastern reaches.
Traditionally, Tanzania is known for its Northern Circuit so our Safari takes you through other parks on the way to the Serengeti where the migration occurs.
The Great Migration Safaris
The Serengeti National Park is a protected area of over 30,000 square kilometers. It is twice the size of Hawaii. The Great Migration is a naturally occurring event and changeable with weather patterns. As such it is incredibly challenging to guarantee dramatic river crossings or live-action calving.
Our Safaris are designed to make sure you are in the right place for where the migration should be at that time of year. We operate mobile camps so we can move when the herds move. During your safari, herds could be anywhere between 1 minute to 2.5 hours drive away due to the sheer expanse of the Serengeti National Park.
We can tailor any of the below safaris to suit your dates and requirements; adding additional parks and even Zanzibar or surrounding islands to your itinerary.
The average cost of our suggested Safaris range from $6,000 per person up to $12,000 per person.
